Labour party members in the Harborough constituency have selected solicitor Sundip Meghani to contest the next General Election.
Cllr Meghani is a Leicester City councillor for the Beaumont Leys area of Leicester and serves on the court of Leicester University.
He was previously a member of the Leicestershire Police Authority until its abolition in late 2012.
He said: “I’m delighted that local people have backed me to take on the Tories and Lib Dems in Harborough.
“I’m looking forward to getting out on the doorsteps and making the case for Labour’s One Nation alternative.”
Mr Meghani faces an uphill battle for what has been a safe Tory seat for more than 50 years, with the Liberal Democrats being the next-best supported party during recent elections.
Conservative MP Sir Edward Garnier has held the seat, which covers parts of the Harborough district as well as the towns of Oadby and Wigston, since 1992.
Prior to that, Sir John Farr was the MP from 1959 to 1992.
