Hallaton Treasure to feature on national TV
THE HALLATON Treasure is to feature in the top ten in a national TV programme exploring Britain’s most important archaeological finds.
The Treasure, a collection of 5,000 gold and silver Iron Age and Roman coins as well as a magnificent silver-gilt Roman helmet, silver bowl, as well as other objects found near the village in 2000, will feature in the final episode of ITV’s “Britain’s Secret Treasures”.
It will be shown on ITV 1 on Sunday at 7pm.
A panel of British Museum experts and presenters, including historian Bettany Hughes, TV journalist Michael Buerk and former cabinet minister Michael Portillo, voted on their ranking, with the Hallaton Treasure one of two Leicestershire entries in the top ten, alongside the silver-gilt Bosworth boar badge, found on the site of the Battle of Bosworth.
David Sprason, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for museums, said he hoped the show would inspire people to see the Hallaton Treasure – on display at Harborough Museum – for themselves.
“This shows how rich this county’s heritage is and the crucial role we played in national history,” he added.
