Fruits of nature are helping brighten town

The session was arranged as part of the Grow and Pick scheme in the town – which encourages people to grow some of their own food in gardens and public spaces.

The group of several residents from Lenthall Square were continuing on work which began in December when blackcurrant bushes and heritage trees were planted.

In the summer, the fruit will be for everyone who lives in the area to taste and share.

A spokesman for Grow and Pick said: “This gives people the opportunity to meet their neighbours, to share seeds and plants and eventually the produce they have grown.

“Some open public spaces such as Lenthall Square are being used to grow fruit, herbs and vegetables for everyone – passers-by included. Volunteers do not need to have grown anything before and we welcome people of all ages and abilities.”

The group have also planted several hundred narcissi bulbs which are now in full bloom along Great Bowden Road, in Lenthall Square itself, and in the front of the Godfrey Peyton offices in St Mary’s Road.
