A Harborough group which has supported the community and raised funds for charity in the town for 40 years has bowed out.
Market Harborough Lions Club held its final meeting last Tuesday and the group said its decision about who to donate the balance of its remaining charity funds to was one of the easiest decisions it has made.
It had pledged the surplus from its last fundraising golf tournament to a prostate cancer charity in memory of long-serving member David Newman, of Kibworth.
They eventually gave £1,000 to the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire-based prostate cancer charity PROSTaid.
President Peter Warren said: “David was a long-serving and hard-working member for 30 years and died earlier this year from prostate cancer.
“It was fitting that we should end our community service with a donation to this important charity in memory of David.
“We are very grateful for the support given to us over the years by the people of Market Harborough and surrounding district and we are pleased to say that Lions community work will be continued in the town by the new Harborough Twenty12 Lions Club.”
The men’s club in town was formed in 1974 with a mixed club established in 2005.
