Topping the charts but don’t slow now

A CAMPAIGN to improve broadband speeds in Leicestershire is being led from the front by people in the Harborough district.

New figures released this week show that our area is outstripping the competition by some margin.

The Mail launched its Back the Broadband Bid campaign last month, urging people to complete an online survey and show the powers-that-be how strongly we feel about getting better internet speeds for the Harborough district.

The survey is being hosted by Leicestershire County Council which has put £4million on the table – combined with a Government grant of £3million – to improve broadband speeds. And County Hall confirmed on Monday that the Harborough area has taken a commanding lead.

Nearly half of the 3,012 people to fill in the survey so far are from the Harborough district.

Our total of 1,279 compares to just 51 for Leicester city, 198 for Blaby, 358 for Loughborough, 258 for north-west Leicestershire, 404 for Melton and just four for Rutland.

A total of 404 of the responses countywide have been from firms.

A county council spokesman said: “You can really see the difference in the Harborough area.”

But now is not the time to be complacent and slow down.

There are still two weeks left for residents and businesses in the Harborough patch to fill in the online survey and bolster the bid for better broadband. To complete the survey, visit www.leics.gov.uk/Broadband

Alternatively, to get a hard copy, email broadband@leics.gov.uk or phone 0116 3056179.

The deadline is April 30.
