Market Hall rent bid is revealed

ANGER has been directed at the council after a confidential document showed it is trying to lease out the Market Hall despite a formal decision on the site having yet to be reached.

Harborough District Council has come under fire over its plan to rent out the Northampton Road hall to a big-name retailer while moving the market traders to Fox Yard at the rear of the council offices.

The council has stressed that no decision on the controversial move has been finalised and it launched a consultation exercise last week to gauge public opinion on the proposals.

But a document leaked on Monday showed significant steps have already been made to market the hall as available for rent.

Colliers International has placed a ‘confidential’ brochure on its website saying the 20,000sq ft site is available to rent at £20 per square foot. The document also says the site could be extended over two more storeys.

Market traders and Lib Dem councillors have directed anger at the council’s Tory-led executive, accusing them of jumping the gun.

But the council says it has been completely transparent over the issue and says the document is standard practice in its bid to discover whether leasing the Market Hall is financially viable.
