AT the age of 90 and having lived in Kibworth Harcourt all my life I am totally opposed at the suggestion that we should join up with Kibworth Beauchamp, writes Betty Ward.

Kibworth Harcourt is a traditional rural village steeped in unique history recognised by Michael Wood in his recent Story of England.

We have boundaries and area names that have been there for centuries and which is all chronicled in the ancient libraries at Merton College.

Who are we to change all this?

From a practical point of view, the joining of the two parishes would not work.

We live in a democracy in this country, which starts parish council then district council then county council. If we joined up we should become a district council from sheer size.

The argument that the schools, the shops and the activities are in Kibworth Beauchamp is not a valid one as this always happens when a small hamlet is close to a larger one and we do have joint committee already for things like burial and recreation.

A joint council would reduce the representation of Kibworth Harcourt.

Kibworth Harcourt Parish Council has, over the years, mostly operated to full capacity and always been solid and committed, whereas Kibworth Beauchamp Council is constantly changing their officers and are always under strength.

In view of this, how would they cope with the extra capacity of a liaison with Kibworth Harcourt, which now includes the larger estate of Kibworth Meadows, especially as the Kibworth Harcourt councillors do not agree to a merger and would therefore resign.

My solution would be to have two joint meetings per year, less the burial and recreational committee.

Then any joint matters could then be discussed.

None of those members of the public who have been writing to the press are fully informed, as not one of them ever attends the Kibworth Harcourt Parish Council meetings. I should know, as I attend every one.
