Doing the district proud at momentous opening ceremony

OLYMPIC athletes will pass through a guard of honour created by pupils from a Harborough school, the world will hear the beat of a Husbands Bosworth drummer and the opening ceremony will be lit up with the help of a lighting apprentice from Harborough.
The town’s involvement with the Olympics will not be limited to the opening and closing ceremonies of London 2012.
In Coventry, Ann Bushby, of the Foxton Inclined Plane Trust, is a volunteer driver who will be transporting dignitaries.
She said: “They said there would be community spirit and so far that is what there has been.”
Sophie Bingham, Olympics ambassador at Harborough’s Robert Smyth Academy, will be helping out with communications at Loughborough.

Robert Smyth pupils will have a part to play today (Friday), with eight of them helping to form a guard of honour through which competing athletes will walk on their way to the Olympic Stadium
One of the pupils, Abby Amos, said: “I’m very excited and feel it is an honour to be part of the opening ceremony.
“I can’t wait to see all the athletes – I’m looking forward to the experience.”
The opening and closing ceremonies will feature talented individuals from the district.

Matt Compton of Kingston Way, Harborough, is working as an apprentice with lighting designers and has helped construct props for the big event.
And Steve Price, of Husbands Bosworth, is one of the drummers performing on opening night. He said: “We have got two rehearsals left and everything is beginning to take shape. I’m not nervous, I can’t wait. I just want it to be Friday night right now.”
