STRUGGLING to persuade your children to eat vegetables? It’s easy - just get them to brush their teeth with a cucumber.

The unusual technique is just one of a number of methods used by a new group in Harborough to teach children the importance of getting their five a day.

Freggies: Friends who Love Fruit and Veggies has been started up by Sarah Watson.

The 29-year-old mum got the idea when she was working as a nanny in London, where she used to take the children to a class about child nutrition.

The class would introduce children to fruit and vegetables in a fun way and this gave Ms Watson the idea to set up her own class after she moved to Harborough.

Classes will never tell a child to try a fruit or vegetable but Ms Watson said that children will end up trying the food that they are playing with in the group.

She said: “Only 16 per cent of our under-fives are getting the required amount of fruit and veg in their diet.”

The classes will have fun activities designed to get children familiar with fruit and vegetables in a fun way.

There are fruit cars to race, while teeth can be brushed with cucumber, children can paint with beetroot and use vegetables and fruits in the shape of stamps to do craft activities.

Ms Watson, who lives in Granville Street, Harborough, has a child of her own, Scarlett, aged two.

Classes will have a different vegetable theme each week and Ms Watson said that sponsorship is being provided for the fruit and vegetables they use by Farndon Fields Farm Shop.

Classes will be for age 18 months up to five years although there will be a baby area as well at the classes, which will start in April.

For more information about classes and to sign up for them contact Ms Watson on 01858 440180 or 07825 576752.

You can also contact her by email on lovefreggies@yahoo.co.uk.

Ms Watson is currently offering special introductory prices and is also going to be putting on summer holiday workshops.
