The family of a Harborough girl who died when she was just five years old will be remembering her life with a 10-mile walk for charity.
The Kilby family are hoping to raise at least £500 for the county’s Rainbows Children’s Hospice. Lauren Kilby was diagnosed with Monosmy 21, an extremely rare chromosome disorder, shortly after her birth. She lost her fight for life in 2004.
Now her father Martin, mother Claire, sister Hannah (23), brother Mitchell (20) and sister Teigan (12) of Russet Close in Market Harborough are all taking part in the Rainbows Walk of Life at Watermead Country Park in Charnwood, Leics, this Sunday.
Claire said: “We wanted to mark the tenth anniversary of Lauren’s death.
“Now we can concentrate on remembering all the fun times and happy memories we have of her.
“Lauren’s personality was brilliant. She couldn’t move, she couldn’t talk, but her face and her smile said it all.
“I always say she gave us much more than we could give her.”
When Lauren was diagnosed in 1998, there were only seven cases of Monosmy 21 in the world. She was fed through a tube and relied on medication and specialist equipment to keep her alive.
Rainbows helped the Kilbys with respite care throughout Lauren’s life and also with bereavement support afterwards.
Claire added: “Rainbows was so brilliant for all of us,
“The sibling support given to Hannah and Mitchell – who were 12 and nine at the time – was fantastic.”
Hannah, now 23, agreed, saying: “Me and my brother did struggle at the time, but Rainbows came to the house to give sibling support and were really brilliant with us.
“Now we talk about Lauren all the time and it’s about keeping her memory alive.”
This year Rainbows is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is aiming to raise an extra £100,000 to fund more children’s nurses.
The Walk of Life raises funds to help the hospice provide essential care to children and young people with terminal and life-limiting illnesses.
Entry for the event, which starts at 10.30am, costs £5 for adults and £3 for children.
