Warning after yobs set trap in alleyway

Yobs who placed string at neck height across an alleyway in Harborough could have caused a serious accident, police have warned.

The string was placed across the alleyway leading from Newcombe Street into Patrick Street on Tuesday night last week.

Bottles filled with water were tied to both ends of the string and it was placed at neck-height.

It was reported to police by a woman and her friend after they walked into it. Fortunately, neither were hurt.

Harborough police believe the trap was set as a practical joke.

But PC Malc Roberts, who is based at the Harborough station in Leicester Road, said the culprits need to realise the seriousness of the situation.

He said: “If someone was cycling along or walking through the alley it could have caused them quite bad injuries to their neck area.

“It’s something we’re taking very seriously.

“We believe it might have been a practical joke but these people need to realise the serious nature of it.

“It is stupidity byt it’s the kind of stupidity that could have led to a very serious accident.”

PC Roberts appealed for witnesses to come forward.

“If the people involved want to come forward and speak to us then we will deal with them.

“But also if anyone saw anything at that time I would urge them to contact us.”

Witnesses to the incident or anyone with information can contact Harborough police using the 101 hotline number.
