Updated: Police name cyclist killed in hit-and-run

A CYCLIST killed in a hit-and-run near Bruntingthorpe has been named by police.

The cyclist was travelling along Bruntingthorpe Road last Friday afternoon when he was hit from behind by the van, which failed to stop.

The cyclist - named today as Adam Bennett (41), of Kibworth - was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

He died in hospital on Tuesday night.

A 68-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Constable Seamus Burns is investigating the incident.

He said: “The cyclist was travelling towards Bruntingthorpe Airfield when he was struck from behind by a van travelling in the same direction.

“From enquiries we’ve conducted so far we’ve located a van believed to have been involved in the collision however we would still like to trace the drivers of other vehicles which we believe were in the vicinity of the cyclist at the time of the incident.

“If you were travelling along this road near Shearsby Bath on Friday afternoon (November 2) and believe you may have seen the cyclist we would urge you to contact us, as any information you can provide could assist with our enquiries.

“We would also urge anyone else that was travelling in that area to contact us if they witnessed the collision or saw any of the vehicles beforehand.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 1504 Seamus Burns on 101, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number 1504.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
