Shoplifter caught with trolley load of goods

A MAN was given a caution by police after he was caught attempting to steal £80-worth of goods from a Harborough supermarket.

The 28-year-old was stopped in Sainsbury’s car park at about 1.30pm on Friday while in the process of putting the trolley-load of goods in his car.

Store staff had earlier reported their suspicions to police via the HART radio system.

CCTV was also used to track the man as he left the store and record his car’s registration plate should he try to escape.

Harborough police said the man was interviewed at the station and admitted theft.

He was given a caution and the stolen items - which appeared to be the contents of a normal weekly shop and even included a bunch of flowers - were returned to the store

The HART radio also helped police seize a fake £20 note in the town centre on Friday.

Police were called after a shop contacted them via the radio system to say they had just refused a man who tried to pay for goods with the note.

Officers stopped a man in St Mary’s Place after recognising him from the description given.

He was taken to the police station and the note was seized and destroyed.

Police said no further action was taken against the man.
