Motorists warned over fake jewellery scam

Motorists are being warned not to fall for a fake gold jewellery scam.

The warning has been issued by Northants Police after incidents in the county in which motorists were flagged down and sold gold jewellery which turned out to be fake.

Incidents have been reported on the A14 near Welford as well as in Islip, Braunston, Kislingbury and Weedon.

Police said: “The offenders will flag down cars and tell motorists something along the lines of having run out of fuel and having no money on them. They will then offer to exchange gold jewellery for cash.

“Where money is exchanged, the buyer will later discover that the jewellery they have purchased is, in fact, fake.”

A police spokesman added: “We are unsure whether this is one group or several groups operating this scam.

“We would urge motorists who find themselves approached to refuse any offers of jewellery, to take in as much information about the offenders as possible and to contact us on 101.”
