Motorists fined during ‘Fatal 4’ police operation
MOTORISTS were picked up for not wearing seatbelts, using a mobile phone while driving and breaking the speed limit during a police operation in Lutterworth.
But encouragingly, say officers who carried out the ‘Fatal 4’ operation in Coopers Lane in Dunton Bassett and Brookfield Way in Lutterworth none of the 31 drivers stopped failed a breathalyser.
Of the cars stopped on December 11 and 12, 12 people were given a ticking off for not wearing their seatbelt.
Two were issued with £60 fines and three points on their licence for using a mobile phone, and 17 were stopped for speeding. Four of those motorists were fined £60 and issed with a three point penalty notice.
The operation was named after the four most common causes of death and injury on the roads - drink driving, excessive speed, mobile phone use and not wearing a seatbelt.
PC Andy Smalley said: “Although it was encouraging that no-one was found to be over the drink driving limit during the operation it was disappointing to find some motorists still don’t appear to be heeding our safety messages and appreciating the dangers when travelling on local roads.”
The police’s festive drink-drive campaign started on December 1and continues until Wednesday, with extra roadside operations in place across the county during the period.
