More bobbies on the beat for area

THERE will be more police officers on the beat in Harborough and the surrounding district following a neighbourhood policing review.

Police say the resources of Safer Neighbourhood Teams have been increased and realigned to match demand and provide the teams with more ability to manage and solve crimes, repeat offending, vulnerability and anti- social behaviour.

Insp Paul McKinder, the head of Harborough police, said it means there will be “the right people, in the right place, at the right time”.

He added that the distribution of police resources should meet demand. The changes came into effect on Monday.

A safer neighbourhood team consists of a sergeant, a “beacon” officer, police community support officer and safer neighbourhood team officer.

The beacon officer will be a named public contact for each neighbourhood area, who will develop and manage engagement with community and take a problem-solving approach to identify and manage emerging crime threats.

The teams will have responsibility for a defined geographic area which will include Harborough, Broughton Astley, Lutterworth and the villages.

Insp McKinder told the Mail the teams will be expected to deliver long-term sustainable reductions in crime and anti-social behaviour.

These include crime and incident investigation, arresting and dealing with suspects, community issues and the managing of offenders.

Although they will be responsible for their geographic area they will move between other neighbourhoods within their policing unit if a threat arises.

Insp McKinder said: “I see this as a real positive step for delivering what the community wants.”

Harborough Police Station in Leicester Road is also being made a hub where response officers for Wigston will also be based, although there will still be police officers at Wigston.
