Man struck with bottle during street row

A BOTTLE was smashed over a man’s head during an argument in a Harborough street leaving him needing six stitches to a cut, a court heard.

Leicester Crown Court heard 19-year-old catering student Hannah Brittan was so angry during the row she did not realise she had a bottle in her hand when she “lashed out” at the man, the court was told.

Brittan, of Pochin Drive, Harborough, struck the victim on the head, causing a cut needing six stitches.

She was sentenced to 10 months’ detention, suspended for a year, after admitting unlawful wounding at the Crown Court last week.

She was also slapped with a three-month night-time curfew and must pay the victim £600 compensation.

The incident happened in St Mary’s Road in the early hours of May 29 last year.

Alan Murphy, prosecuting, said the 21-year-old victim and Brittan were involved in an argument at 2am after they had visited bars. Mr Murphy said: “She was angry and irate. She lashed out, forgetting she had a bottle. It hit him to the left side of his head, just above his eyebrow, causing fairly heavy, immediate bleeding. The defendant walked off, stopping to tell a friend she had just ‘bottled’ someone and was scared.”

The bottle did not break but the impact caused a “deep 2cm cut,” said Mr Murphy.

It caused pain and headaches and left a scar which has affected the victim’s self-confidence, the court heard.

Jonathan Longman, for Brittan, said she had no previous convictions and references spoke highly of her, describing her as “honest, kind, hardworking, polite and respectable”. Mr Longman said the use of the beer bottle “wasn’t deliberate” and added: “She had been holding it naturally in her hand, as if drinking. She’s regretted her actions ever since. She doesn’t blame alcohol.”
