Man dies in crash on rural road

A passenger in a 4x4 was killed at the weekend after the vehicle was in collision with a lorry.

The man who died in the crash on the A6006 Loughborough Road near Melton is Gavin Smith (34), who the Mail understands has links to the Harborough area.

The crash happened shortly after 6am on Saturday morning on a stretch of road known as the Shoby bends.

Police said two vehicles were involved - a Landrover Discovery and a Renault articulated lorry.

Mr Smith, a front seat passenger in the Landrover, died at the scene.

The other two people in the Landrover were taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary for a check up. One of them was treated for minor injuries.

A 54-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with the incident, has been bailed until June 4 pending further enquiries, police said.

The road reopened just before 4pm.

Det Cons Pete Davies, the investigating officer, said: “The lorry was travelling towards Melton and the Landrover Discovery was travelling in the opposite direction at the time of the collision.

“We would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw either of the vehicles beforehand, to please contact the police immediately.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC Pete Davies on 101, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number 1761.
