A former police Sergeant who lives in Harborough has been awarded The Chief Constable’s Commendation for Outstanding Work in the police force.

Mrs Julie Saunders (50) was awarded the accolade at a ceremony which was held on March 14 at Leicestershire Constabulary Headquarters in Enderby.

The Chief Constable, Mr Simon Cole and the High Sheriff of Rutland, Mr Peter Lawson awarded Mrs Saunders with her commendation.

Julie has lived in Harborough for the last 12 years and is married to Roy. They have four children together - Rebecca (14), Hannah (15), Dale (20) and Katherine (21). Before working in Leicestershire, she worked as a Sergeant in North East and North West London for eleven different police forces.

Before joining the Leicestershire Constabulary, Julie worked for Wellingborough Council in their HR department and prior to this she completed a Masters in Personnel and Development which she said gave her the HR qualifications she now possesses.

Speaking about how she felt after receiving the award, Mrs Saunders said: “I was delighted. After eighteen months of negotiations, the updated handbook has been published.”

The local police staff conditions of service handbook was last revised in 1994, and in 2008 a national police staff conditions of service handbook was published.

Julie was employed in July 2009 as an HR officer to re-write the local handbook and update it to include the national terms and conditions. Throughout her new job role, Julie was involved with HR strategy.

The former Sgt negotiated with Unison and GMB during the revision of the handbook, and liaised with both of the Trade Unions to publish the updated version.

Julie Saunders worked in the Metropolitan Police Force for twenty-three years and has been in her present role for three years

Award-winning Mrs Saunders is also a member of The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
