Fire alert led to a cannabis discovery

MORE than 150 cannabis plants were found at a Lutterworth house when police were called after a fire there.

Fire crews from Lutterworth were called to a chimney fire at the New Street home on Tuesday, April 3, and called police officers when they became suspicious after being denied access to an upstairs bedroom to check whether the fire had been properly extinguished.

Police officers found 25 cannabis plants in that room and uncovered more than 150 plants when they conducted a full search.

The plants were at various stages of maturity, some were only seeds while others were fully grown.

Sgt Peter Jelbert, head of Lutterworth police, said: “A 44-year-old man was arrested by officers and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

“The fire service had contacted us after being called to a chimney fire.

“They were able to put out the fire but needed to carry out safety checks in the house and were told they could not access the front bedroom of the property.”

Sgt Jelbert said that as well as cannabis plants, equipment for growing plants indoors, such as hydroponic equipment, was also seized.

He added: “Some plants were discovered in the front bedroom in a wardrobe.

“About 70 more plants were found in another bedroom and more were found in a cupboard underneath the stairs as well as in other locations around the house.”

Sgt Jelbert said the plants had been sent to the force’s forensics team for further investigation.
