Arrests made following booze-fuelled violence

ALCOHOL-fuelled incidents in three Harborough town centre pubs kept police busy on Saturday night.

A fight at the Red Cow at about 10pm resulted in the arrests of a man and a woman, but neither were charged after the victim did not press charges.

In a separate incident, officers were called to the Sugar Loaf at 11pm following reports of an assault. Insp Paul McKinder, head of Harborough police, said a man was arrested but no further action taken after the complaint was retracted.

Insp McKinder said both incidents were minor and that neither of the victims suffered serious injury.

A man was also arrested shortly after 3am on suspicion of causing criminal damage in the Three Swans Hotel, after allegedly throwing a chair.

The man would be dealt with by police, added Insp McKinder.

Insp McKinder told the Mail that the presence of extra officers in the town on Friday and Saturday nights helped secure arrests in each of the incidents. “Not only does it give us a visible presence in town at the weekend, it means officers can be there on the scene to deal with any incident straight away,” he said.

Violent incidents in the town centre are down by more than 45 per cent on last year, he added. There were 27 incidents from April 1 to October 7 this year, from 47 last year.
