PLACARD-waving protesters vented their anger last night (THursday) against a Harborough Council plan to approve a 1,800-home plan for the Airfield Farm site on the outskirts of Harborough.

About 100 people stood outside the council offices in Adam and Eve Street to highlight their opposition to the Tory-run council’s stance.

But councillors inside the building, who were holding a scrutiny panel meeting on the issue, voted down a recommendation to bring the matter back to the executive for further review. The recommendation was defeated 7-3.

Placards bore slogans such as ‘Save our market town’, ‘Review the plans and be responsible’ and ‘Represent the community and do the right thing’.

The protest was organised by residents’ group MHRAID (Market Harborough Residents Against Inappropriate Development) who say people from Harborough, Lubenham, Foxton and Great Bowden were among the protest.

Cllr Phil KNowles told the mail this morning: “You hear people talk about localism. Localism died in Harborough last night. The people have been completely ignored.”

About ten members of the public spoke at the scrutiny meeting.

MHRAID want the council to vote for a wider review of the homes plan and are organising a forthcoming public meeting.

Close to 300 people have now signed a petition against the homes plan.
