A FAMILY which has been in the baking business for five generations has opened a new cake shop in Harborough town centre.

Gardners Cakery, in Church Street, is the second shop owned by the Gardner family – which has been trading in Northampton for more than a century – but the first in Harborough.

It is being run by sisters Amber (19) and Ella Felce (17) and the pair are also being helped out by their elder sister Mia (20), who works there on Fridays.

Amber, the new shop manager, has been involved in the family business since she was 15, but running her own shop will be a completely new experience.

She said: “The family has had a bakery in Northampton for years, but the new shop will be deadling exclusively with cakes of all kinds.

“We can cater for birthdays, weddings, parties and celebrations of all kinds and we also have cup cakes and other treats which people can take away with them.

“We also sell everything that people need to make their own cakes.”

The new shop in Church Street was formerly known as Daisy Lane Gift Shop.

Amber added: “Harborough is really nice and there isn’t really another cake shop like ours in the town.

“We’ve been getting really good feedback from customers so far.”

Amber said the inspiration for cake decorating comes from a lot of different places, but customers often suggest their own ideas when they are purchasing a cake for a special occasion.

She added: “People are welcome to pop in and talk to us about ideas they have and we can tell them exactly what we can do.”

The three sisters running the Harborough shop also have another younger sister, Leila (14), who works at the family’s Northampton bakery.

Amber said she knew from a young age she wanted to be involved in the family business.

She added: “I knew I didn’t want to go to university, and having me involved means my mum Helen has been able to expand the business.”
