Plan to turn hotel into students’ digs

PLANS have been submitted to turn a town hotel into student accommodation.

Don Williams, owner of Harborough’s Brooke House College, The Angel Hotel and other properties in town, has written to the district council for permission to change the use of the Copperfield Hotel in Northampton Road.

Students from the college, based in Leicester Road, already rent space at the former site of Acorn Lodge residential home, next to the Copperfield building.

In the planning documents, Mr Williams says: “Our development plan is to consolidate boarding provision by creating larger units making management and maintenance easier and to enhance students’ experience by being able to improve facilities, particularly in terms of a better common room.”

He adds: “There is no shortage of hotel rooms in the Harborough area.”

A 60-bed Travelodge opened in Abbey Street in May 2011.
