Morrisons confirms plans for Broughton Astley

Supermarket giant Morrisons has confirmed plans to build a new supermarket in Broughton Astley.

The 15,000sq ft store - about the same size as the new Waitrose supermarket in Harborough - is planned for land east of Broughton Way, Morrisons announced today (Tuesday).

Designed as part of Jelson Homes housing development, the store would create 150 new jobs.

It will offer a full range of goods and services, including Morrisons’ ‘Fresh Market’ with butcher, fishmonger, and fresh food counters.

The new supermarket is planned to form part of a larger development scheme including

around 300 new homes with a range of size and tenures, start up business units, indoor and

outdoor community sports facilities and public open space.

James Smith, development executive at Morrisons, said: “We’re very excited to be a part of the new development in Broughton Astley and to bring our passion and love for fresh food and choice to the village. We believe our unique offer of high quality, fresh food at great prices, is what makes us stand out against our competitors.

“We’re committed to providing a top-quality shopping experience and are delighted that we’ll be able to provide this with a brand new state of the art store for existing and future local residents to enjoy.

“Our deal with Jelson is great news for us and Broughton Astley – local people can look

forward to being able to do their weekly food shopping locally.”

Terry McGreal, land and planning director of Jelson Homes said: “We are delighted to be able to announce Morrisons involvement in the scheme which is now moving forward towards a planning application.

“Family owned and run since 1889 we’re proud of our Leicestershire roots and recognise the importance of our involvement with the local community. The inclusion of a high quality supermarket as part of our proposals will complete the package of benefits that the scheme will bring to the residents of Broughton Astley.

“This will also include new indoor sports facilities, new employment opportunities and significant new public open space, all at the heart of the village and readily accessible to residents”

Morrisons, in conjunction with Jelson will now work on developing the plans for the site and will consult with the local community on the emerging proposals over the next few months, the firms said in a statement today.
