A HARBOROUGH woman has opened a traditional sweet shop which she says will hark back to the days of jars of sweets from floor to ceiling.

Elaine Harrald opened her shop – called Mix’d Bag in Nelson Street – several weeks ago but hosted her official opening last Friday complete with balloons, cup cakes and a clown.

Elaine had been unemployed for two years before deciding to take over the shop, which was formerly known as Cut Price Carpets.

She said: “I live nearby and every day I would look at the shop and think it was in a really good location as lots of people walk past it.

“It then became available because the carpet shop closed down, and when the ‘To Let’ sign was put up I got in touch with the agents straight away, because I knew I would regret it if I didn’t take that opportunity.”

Elaine said she aims to recreate the feel of the traditional sweet shop with her new venture.

She added: “It’s something I remember from when I was younger so I want to recreate that sense of excitement for children.”

Although Elaine did run a shop in Desborough about 20 years ago, she said she is regarding her new project as a completely new venture.

She added: “I’ve worked in lots of different backgrounds but this is new and exciting.”

As well as selling sweets, Elaine will also sell arts and crafts created by artists in the Harborough area.

She said: “We will display and sell the items for a commission.

“The artists aren’t people I know, they’re all people who responded to posters I put up in the window and messages on my Facebook page.

“I’ve got some really god stuff on display at the moment.”

The new shop is in Nelson Street opposite the rear of Our Lady of Victories Church.
