AN AWARD-winning documentary about the record label behind some of the biggest British bands of the last 20 years has gone global.

Medbourne resident Danny O’Connor’s widely-acclaimed Upside Down film about Creation Records is set for a cinematic release in 38 countries.

The film is also due to be shown on BBC Four tonight (Friday, October 28) night at 9pm, kicking off an evening of programmes devoted to the label, which unleashed on an unsuspecting world the likes of Oasis, Primal Scream and the Super Furry Animals.

It caps an amazing year for Mr O’Connor’s Document Productions company, since the documentary premiered at the prestigious London Film Festival last October.

It has been shown at film festivals across the world and this summer won the Vision award at the Mojo Honours List.

The film is now to be distributed world-wide after impressing some of the movers and shakers in world cinema during its festival run.

It is currently being shown in New Zealand and will soon reach cinemas in Australia, Japan, the US, continental Europe, Asia and South America.

The global release has been secured with the help of NatWest, which provided a loan to allow the company to purchase the music rights for a world-wide release.

Mr O’Connor, whose career includes stints at Radio One and Channel Four, said: “When we started out I knew we’d do well in the UK and thought we’d have a chance in the US, but I didn’t factor in places like Malaysia, Hong Kong, South America. It’s crazy to think the film is being shown in all these places while I’m walking around Medbourne.”

Mr O’Connor praised his production team, including his partner, production manager Karen Craig, and assistants Thomas Snee and Joe Powell – friends who spent their summers working behind the scenes on the film while students at university.

It gave Medbourne-born Joe a chance to meet one of his heroes, Noel Gallagher, during filming in London.

The economics graduate, who met Mr O’Connor while working at the Nevill Arms pub, said: “It was a pretty massive deal for me. I’ve been a massive Oasis fan since I was ten years old so it was pretty special.”

Joe and Leicester-born Thomas, who recently gained a degree in broadcast journalism, also researched facts and archive footage for the film.

“They were very much part of the team,” said Mr O’Connor.

“They’re diligent, trustworthy and very talented.”
