Auction firm’s move plan

A FAMILY-run firm of auctioneers are hoping to move to bigger premises at a former mill site in Harborough.

Gildings Auctioneers has been based in the town since 1980, operating from its sale room in Roman Way.

But it is looking to expand and has submitted a planning application to change The Mill, off Fernie Road, into a sale room.

The move would give the growing business more room and offer space for 30 cars to park.

Mark Gilding told the Mail: “We’re very excited about it. We’re fortunate to have a large number of clients with lots of things they would like us to sell for them and the current premises - with the combination of its lack of parking space and restricted access - is no longer adequate.

“We’re really looking forward to improving all of these things at the new location.

“We’re in what is primarily a residential area now, which wasn’t the case when we moved in.

“We love Harborough - it has been very good for our business over the years - and we’re delighted to have found a building in the town that suits our needs.”

Mr Gilding said there were no plans to change the exterior or character of the 19th century former mill site, but said the interior would be adapted to suit their needs.

The new building would feature extra room for gallery displays and cataloguing and benefits from improved access, he added.

The planning application to change the use of The Mill was submitted to Harborough District Council this week.

“We’re really hopeful of a positive decision from the planners,” said Mr Gilding.

“If only because we’re very keen to stay within the town.”

There would be no immediate plans to recruit extra staff should the move go ahead, but the business is ‘heading in the right direction’, he added.

If the move goes ahead Gildings is hoping to launch the opening of the new site with a special county-themed auction, with interesting and unusual lots specifically from the county.

Anyone with antique items of interest they wish to put up for auction is urged to contact Gildings on 01858 410414 or visit www.gildings.co.uk.
