Brenda Lincoln: quiltmaker for injured servicemen

A LUTTERWORTH woman who organised a group of friends to make quilts for injured servicemen and women has been nominated for a Pride in Harborough award.

Brenda Lincoln, from Cunningham Drive, said she was emotionally touched by images of wounded soldiers returning to the UK from Afghanistan and Iraq and decided to do something to help them.

She has been nominated in the Hard Work and Determination category.

She used her skills as a quilter, and the skills of a group of about ten friends and family, to make quilts which would be sent to Headley Court, in Surrey, to be used by recuperating soldiers.

She said: "My husband was in the army and was injured himself and if it wasn't for the efforts of the military doctors and nurses he may never have fully recovered.

"I just really wanted to do something to help so I organised some of my friends into a group and we began making quilts."

The quilts are all made from donated materials, shirts and wadding. Any money given to the group, which was named Quilts For Injured Servicemen (Q4IS), is used to buy more material.

About 120 have been made so far by the group, which got together almost a year ago.

Mrs Lincoln, who has lived in Lutterworth with husband David for 22 years, said: "Some of the soldiers like the quilts to be customised, so we put regiment names on them and so on.

"Depending on the level of detail required, they can take three days to complete.

"I often get up early in the morning to begin quilting."

Mrs Lincoln was nominated by friend and Q4IS member John Franks, from Cedar Avenue in Lutterworth, who describes himself as a 'general dogsbody' but who is, according to Mrs Lincoln, the group spokesman.
