AN ACTRESS who used to live in Hallaton has made her small screen debut with a lead role in a BBC children's programme.
Former Hallaton Primary School pupil Naomi Battrick (18) is starring in the CBBC Saturday morning programme, My Almost Famous Family.

The half-hour 11-part comedy show, which features the all-singing, all-dancing Swann family, has been airing on the CBBC channel on BBC 2 on Saturdays at 10am since September 12 and will run until November 21.

By day the Swanns perform as TV pop group We’re In Perfect Harmony and by night they’re a large and sometimes harmonious step-family.

Naomi plays musical genius and obsessive compulsive Toyah.

She said: “She’s a 15-year-old with OCD [obsessive compulsive disorder], a perfectionist and a musician. I think her OCD was probably because her mother died when she was very young and it’s her way of having control over that situation.”

Naomi and her mum, Penny, moved from Hare Pie View in Hallaton to London when she was 11 years old to live with her mum’s new partner Andy and his two daughters Laura (22) and Rebecca (20).

Naomi has been training at Ravenscourt Theatre School in London for the past three years. She said: “Everyone gets assigned an agent at the school and I was always being called up for auditions, but then I got a call back for this show.

“I couldn’t believe it.

“We did the filming at Pinewood Studios and I saw Jack Black walking down a corridor.

“I just smiled at him – it was so cool.”

Naomi, who says she’s always visiting friends and family in and around Hallaton and loves coming back for the annual Bottle Kicking event at Easter, also landed a small part in a new Spike Lee film, Une Noche.

The film, which is set to be released next year, was shot in Cuba and Naomi described the experience as amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The teenager is now continuing her training towards a BTEC in drama until the end of May next year and then hopes to either continue her studies or take a gap year.
