POLICE Authority chiefs have met Government ministers to discuss the possible 'capping' of Leicestershire Constabulary's Council tax increase.
Leicestershire Police Authority yesterday (May 7) met ministers John Healey and Tony McNulty regarding the authority's proposed 15 per cent budget rise for 2008/09.
This follows a letter the authority received from the Communities and Local Govern
ment (CLG) department on Thursday, March 27, informing the authority that the minister had commenced the process which could lead to 'capping' – an action being taken against eight authorities across the country exceeding five per cent increases.
Chairman Byron Rhodes, vice-chairman Barrie Roper and Chief Constable Matt Baggott attended the CLG offices in London to state its case direct to the ministers.
Five of the area's MPs also attended including Harborough MP Edward Garnier.
Mr Rhodes said afterwards: "I am satisfied that we were given the opportunity to put our argument for the increase across to the ministers and can confirm we held a constructive meeting.
"I believe we have strong evidence that supports our decision that the force needs this funding in order to meet the standards that the public deserve.
"I am particularly grateful to the local MPs, who were able to attend the meeting with us for their invaluable support at this time."
