A FORMER Lutterworth mayor has been recognised for 50 years of service to the Labour Party.
During this time Peter Knight (79), of Hazeland Court, has represented the town at parish, district and county level.

Mr Knight, who was born in Leire and has lived in the Lutterworth area all his life, was presented with his award by Government Chief Whip Geoff Hoon at a Lutterworth Labour Party dinner.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Knight thanked his wife Sheila and their four children for all their support over the years.

He added: “As a young man I did not have much interest in politics but I became involved in the 1950s and my real concern was finding housing for people.”

Mr Knight sat on Lutterworth Town Council for 39 years and was a district councillor for the town for about a decade in the 70s and 80s. He was also twice elected to represent the town at county level.
