CCTV footage has been released of an armed robbery at a jewellers.

The harrowing incident happened at around 2.15pm on Tuesday (August 4) when four people raided the Robinsons store in Church Street and threatened staff with what a handgun.

The footage shows four black men enter the store, one wearing a black New York Yankees baseball cap and three others wearing light-coloured hooded tops.

The man in the cap is seen brandishing a silver gun and the footage then shows one of the men in a hoodie take a red hammer to a display case.

Yesterday, police released an update on their inquiry:

*Police issued CCTV footage and images of the five suspects including one of a woman who may have been the getaway driver.

*Revealed that investigations have taken officers to the West Midlands and Northants.

*It is believed a grey Saab, which crashed into another car in Rugby Road before driving off, had cloned number plates.

*Police think the jewellers was being watched in the week before the robbery took place and police want to hear from anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity or any of the people in the CCTV footage in the vicinity of Church Street in the lead up to the robbery.

Three of the suspects are men but there is a possibility the fourth suspect may have been a woman. Police have issued a computer image of this potential suspect.

Detective Inspector Dave Richardson, who is leading the investigation, said yesterday (Monday, Aug 10): "This was obviously a terrifying incident for all those involved, both staff and customers in the jewellers.

"We're asking people to take a close look at the CCTV and the still images of the suspects, do you recognise them? Did you see them in the area or perhaps you know who they are?

"If you do then we'd been keen to hear from you."

After taking cash and jewellery the robbers ran off in the direction of Bank Street. Some of the jewellery was dropped in Bank Street and was later recovered by officers.

Shortly after, at about 2.30pm, police were called to a report of a car crash on the A426 Rugby Road at its junction with Stoney Hollow which officers now believe is linked to the robbery.

A grey Saab containing at least three people and being driven by a woman, failed to stop and left the scene of the crash. Officers have released an Eigen fit of the driver.

Officers now believe the Saab was using cloned plates and are investigating the possibility that it may have been stolen from Northamptonshire. Police are also making enquiries in the West Midlands after one of the suspects was described as having a 'Coventry accent'.

It would also appear the jewellers had been watched in the week before the robbery took place, and police are interested to hear from anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity or any of the people in the CCTV in the vicinity of Church Street in the lead up to the robbery.

There is the possibility that more than one getaway vehicle was used and police are again keen to establish if this was the case.

DI Richardson added: "We're not narrowing the focus of the investigation but we do have a number of leads to explore.

"If people were to come forward with possible names for these suspects, either to me or anonymously through Crimestoppers then this will help get us a step closer to finding those responsible."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DI 1153 Dave Richardson or DS 1935 Julian Allen from south area CID on 0116 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in their identification number 1153 or 1935.

Alternatively, people can phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
