HISTORY came to life with re-enactments at Rockingham Castle when Vikings paid a visit.

More than 1,000 years after real Vikings used the castle’s grounds as their base, their traditions and practices were once again on show.

The Vikings Of Middle England took their battles, horses, pageants and living history camp to the castle, near Harborough on Sunday (August 26).

Members of the group set-up camp in authentic Viking tents on the castle grounds.

Jane James, from Harborough, was at the event with her family. She said: “It really makes you feel as if you are in a real Viking village. It’s like stepping back in time. I think it’s a good family event.”

Visitors learned about the fierce fighting force that visited, traded and colonised England over a period of 300 years.

Famous for its realistic displays, the Vikings of Middle England also educated people about everyday life during that period of history, with tradesmen displaying their skills, making weapons, coins and wood turning.

There was also activates for children, with youngsters encouraged to have a go at archery.

Andrew Norman, the castle’s operations manager, said: “It is a very popular event, year after year with visitors. It’s really good entertainment, and it was on a day when the weather was glorious and the setting was beautiful.

“It is a living history lesson. It’s so completely different to how we live now, so it is good for children to see .

“The castle used to be a Viking settlement more than 1,000 years ago, so this was life coming full circle.”
