The seaside coming to town TODAY!

A TRIP to the seaside will be on offer in landlocked Harborough today (Wednesday, Aug 5)as a beach is brought to the town centre.

The Square will undergo a transformation as part of a big family fun day.

The Harborough By the Sea event is being held from 10am until 4pm today and will feature sandcastle competitions and prizes for finding hidden treasure tokens in the sand.

It will be the fifth summer in a row the popular giant sand pits will make an appearance in town but this year's event will also include a fun day in Welland Park between 1pm and 4pm.

Email your photos of the event to the Mail newsdesk at ian.opray@harboroughmail.co.uk

The theme of this year's event is 'fun across the ages' and the day's events will reflect elements of old and new ways to play.

Chris Sewart, the development officer for Harborough Improvement Team which has helped organise the day, said: "Don't load the car, get stuck in a traffic jam and find the tide's out when you get there – because the seaside is coming to Harborough."

Free buckets and spades will be handed out for the sandcastle contest and there will be a chance to take a photo recreating a Victorian beach scene.

Welland Park will be packed with activities including a free cycle rickshaw ride around town, live music from Happy Jazz performing near the cafe, badge-making, juggling, a Brazilian martial arts demonstration and all-ages five-a-side football.

Fun and games will also be on offer from the Harborough District Council play rangers and a mini-Olympics competition for all the family will be held later in the afternoon.

Harborough-based Voluntary Action South Leicestershire group will also be on hand serving free tea and coffee as well as giving out information on its new Older People's Forum.

Harborough Museum staff will display replica toys from the past and some traditional games which people can try, while Harborough Library will host a Wriggly Readers session with songs and rhymes for the under-fives in a marquee.

The event coincides with National Play Day, a Government-backed charity initiative to encourage more youngsters to get active.
