Triumphant show was full of humour and pathos

REVIEW: Billesdon Drama Society presents “Calendar Girls”, November 29
Unless you have been in a monastery in Tibet for the last 20 years, you’ll know the plot of “Calendar Girls”.
The heartwarming true story of the Yorkshire WI ladies who made an alternative WI calendar, posing nude to raise money for charity after one of their members lost her husband to cancer. They shook the world!
The story was made into a charming and well loved film and the play has recently been released to Drama Societies.
The Guinness Book of Records hopes to break a record for the most performances throughout Britain in a year and since the play is a real audience pleaser, full of humour and pathos, (with a hint of possible titillation,) they could well succeed.
The prestigious Billesdon Drama Society were the latest to perform it in this area, and their audiences were thoroughly entertained.
I have seen professional performances of this play with big named stars, but the feeling of the story was better communicated by ladies who could identify with village WI members.
This they certainly did. Our seven, Jane Kirwan, Debbie Sedgwick, Liz Deacon, Lucy McCarthy, Alison Booker, Donna Dadge and Yvonne Taylor, could have stepped out of any village meeting.
Husbands were Richard Howe and Gerry Nevitt (playing John, who died with grit and humour).
Young Tom Johnson showed versatility and comedy in two roles.
In fact all the cast showed a gift for comedy but this play offered far more. It brought us real life, and I saw a few hankies flourished before the end.
