TRADITIONALLY used to ward off unwanted visitors, scarecrows designed by Lubenham residents are expected to attract thousands of people to the village this weekend.

The 12th annual Lubenham Scarecrow Weekend is set to feature dozens of weird and wonderful straw creations designed and built by villagers.

But the fun does not end there, with a packed programme of activities and live entertainment organised around the main attraction.

The event runs from 11am to 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

This year’s event will feature a visit from Rob Gomez, who ran through the village with the Olympic Flame in July, and who will bring his torch for photo opportunities from midday to 1.30pm on the Saturday.

Jim Burbidge, chairman of the Lubenham Scarecrow Committee, said: “Preparations are well under way for what’s looking to be a great weekend.

“Last Saturday, for the first time, we had a “pre-scarecrow afternoon” and it was a great success.

“Villagers were invited to come along to The Green to collect their straw, browse through photos of scarecrows from previous years, and pick up tips about scarecrow making.

“All the events of this year have certainly provided us with inspiration and it looks as if we’re going to have a great turn out of scarecrows for the weekend. Let’s just hope for some great weather!”
