REVIEW: The Crucible, by Wycliffe Drama Group at Lutterworth College

Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize winning play set amid the hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials of the late 1600s is a challenge for any company but Wycliffe Drama Group’s talented group of actors more than do justice to this classic of American theatre.

The staging is simple. A small collection of chairs, tables and benches are re-configured to become a child’s bedroom, a courtroom and a prison cell with ease. The minimal set and carefully selected props and costumes allow the audience’s focus to be firmly on the characters that populate this extraordinary play.

Miller asks a lot of any actor who takes a part in The Crucible and this company rise to the challenge.

It would be impossible to single any one performer out as everyone involved, from those with only a few lines or a fleeting appearance to those who carry the bulk of the story on their backs, give committed and detailed performances.

The actors had to contend with the huge spectrum of emotion that the script demands. From the quiet intimacy of a marriage in crisis to screaming demonic possession, each scene was carefully crafted and impeccably performed.

As we left the auditorium, many of the audience had clearly been moved to tears by this remarkable play.

With such a high level of talent on your doorstep, if you missed it, you missed out.
