VISITORS to Foxton Locks got a chance to go where few have gone before at the weekend, after drained sections of the historic waterway were opened up.

The popular tourist destination was packed on Saturday and Sunday as people took the rare opportunity to walk on the bottom of the locks.

There was also live music from Foxton Folk Club at the museum on the Sunday, and the launch of a new book about the Foxton Inclined Plane boat lift.

Mike Beech, keeper of Foxton Museum and company secretary of the Foxton Inclined Plane Trust said the event provided a positive end to what had been a poor year for the trust.

Drought earlier in the year saw sections of the canal system closed, and when the rains came they fell so heavily that the Foxton Locks Festival planned for June had to be cancelled due to waterlogging.

The Queen’s Jubilee weekend, the London Olympics and the economic climate also contributed towards lower visitor numbers, said Mr Beech.

“We’ve had the worst year we’ve ever had,” he said. “But this really cheered us up. It went extremely well.”

The event was organised with the Canal and River Trust, which drained the locks as part of a £120,000 repair project.

“We worked really well with the Canal and River Trust and hopefully all the visitors we saw will come back in the summer and tell their friends how wonderful this area of south Leicestershire is,” said Mr Beech.
