FAMILIES learned about the importance of fire safety and got a first-hand experience of what it would be like to escape a burning building at an open day at Lutterworth Fire Station on Sunday (Sept 2).

The event was hosted at the Gilmorton Road station to help raise money for The Firefighters Charity.

For children, there were a number of rides and there was also a chance to climb aboard a mini-fire engine.

There was also a tent which was filled with a safe smoke which aimed to show visitors what it would be like to be trapped inside a burning building.

Firefighters were also on hand to show people some of the equipment they use in the course of their duties.

Leicestershire Fire Service district manager Paul Weston said: “The fire station open days are a fantastic opportunity for us to connect with our community.

“They also give us an opportunity to share safety advice with visitors.”

The fire station hosts the open day every year in August. In previous years it has helped kick off Lutterworth Feast Week.
