MEERKATS are making their way back to Market Harborough where people will be able to handle the cute creatures.

The town went mad for meerkats last year when it was twinned with the fictional town of Meerkovo from the advert for insurance comparison website Compare the Market.

People voted en masse for Market Harborough to become Meerkat Harborough for a day.

Now, real life meerkats will be coming to town in the form of an event at Harborough Museum on Thursday, October 25.

A similar meerkat day at the museum last year proved to be a popular family event.

This time there will be four sessions throughout the day to give more people a chance to see the animals.

Jane Tugwell, an assistant at the museum, said: “Meerkats are not naturally friendly animals, but thanks to the special skills of The Animal Experience team, these meerkates can be handled by everyone who comes to these fantastic hands-on sessions.

“We had such a huge amount of people who were unable to obtain tickets to see them last summer that we have invited them back.”

At the height of meerkat fever last year, a viral meerkat video was made featuring town solicitor Martin Hill and the then chairman of Harborough Council Rosita Page.

Businesses got involved and offered their support to back the Meerkat Harborough bid.

One firm changed its name for the day to Meerkat Harborough Fencing and changed signage on its vans.

Margaret Kenny, of Kenny’s underwear shop in Coventry Road, Harborough, provided a welcoming committee of meerkats in her shop window.

The real life meerkats event at Harborough Museum can be booked by popping into the museum, in Fox Yard off Adam and Eve Street, Harborough, by phoning 01858 821065 or by emailing harboroughmuseum@leics.gov.uk.
