Hannah’s high hopes for success with single
A singer-songwriter from a village in the Lutterworth area is hoping for success after the release this week of her debut single.
With its sultry jazz, retro-soul stylings, When You’re Gone marks a change in direction for Kimcote’s Hannah Boleyn.
But with famous producer Ash Howes having worked on the record, and airplay on BBC Radio 2 ahead of its release, the 22-year-old singer is hopeful for a hit.
Hannah, whose real name is Hannah Beighton, attended a performing arts school but said her desire to break the mould made her an awkward fit.
She said: “It wasn’t for me.
“I just didn’t fit the ‘happy musical theatre student’ box at all. So I decided to do things my way. I ditched the jazz shoes and ballet bun for killer heels, big hair and mini-skirts.”
After leaving the school she tasted some success performing as Hannah B.
She supported James Morrison at a concert at the Leicester Tigers stadium in 2010, and in 2011 performed at the O2 Academy when it was at the University of Leicester.
She eventually moved to London, working for a corporate events company by day and playing gigs, jam sessions and open mic events at night.
Later she performed at a high-end burlesque club before being introduced to producer Ash Howes, who has worked with the likes of The Saturdays, Eliza Doolittle and Ellie Goulding.
Her debut single, described as a contemporary take on the traditional torch song of lost love with a seductive, bluesy tone, has been released by Tudor Gate Records.
“The accompanying video also captures Boleyn’s inimitable sense of style,” said the record label. “Equal parts Christine Keeler, Roxie Hart and Christian Dior’s New Look, it announces Boleyn as an artist with an individual visual presence which incorporates elements of vintage fashion, film noir and burlesque.”
It was played on Graham Norton’s Saturday morning show on BBC Radio 2 and has also been given airtime by Jo Whiley and Steve Wright after making the station’s playlist.
The song was released for download on iTunes on Monday.
