AFTER months of planning and preparation, Rock on the Rec 2012 takes place today (Friday, August 10), writes 13-year-old Luca Veneziale, of the Enable Youth Team.

The event, organised by young people from the Rural Youth Voice project and the Enable Youth Team, will feature a host of live music acts and fun workshops at Harborough’s Symington’s Rec from 4pm to 9pm.

Organisers have been hard at work securing funding and running their own fundraising events to ensure this year’s event is once again completely free.

The group believe this year’s event will be the best yet with the music covering a vast spectrum of genres including rock, soul and dubstep.

In addition to the live music there will be a great selection of free workshops on offer by Rock Solid Academy, Room for Music, The Cube, Sonodrome and Soft Touch Arts.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service will also be there raising awareness of road safety with their crash simulator.

Families and young people are encouraged to come along and are welcome to bring their own food, picnics and deckchairs to create a real festival feel on the day, though hot food and refreshments will be available.

The event is aimed at young people and families and is a strictly alcohol-free zone.

This year organisers are working in partnership with Seven Locks Housing, which is holding a Family Fun event at the rec from 4 to 7pm, with fun activities including bouncy castles and multi-sports sessions.

In its third year, the event is organised The Rural Youth Voice Project - which is a Voluntary Action South Leicestershire Project funded by the Big Lottery, and delivered in partnership with Harborough District Council - and also by Enable Youth, a community group made up of young people.

Organisers expressed their thanks for the support they have received from the district council, especially its Community Safety and Cultural Services teams, as well as other partners including HFM and The Three Swans hotel.

Lead member for community engagement on the council, Blake Pain, said: “Each year Rock on the Rec gets better and better and I have no doubt that this year’s festival will build upon the positive work from last year.”
