Conker festival this weekend

The Husbands Bosworth Conkers Championship is on its way.

The Husbands Bosworth Conkers Championship is on its way.

CONQUERING heroes can compete for glory at a fun family contest being organised in the Harboorugh district this weekend.

The fourth annual conker championship is taking place at Husbands Bosworth Playing Field on Sunday (October 7).

And in a fun addition to the festivities, there will also be a welly-wanging tournament.

The event will be raising funds for the Parkinson’s UK charity and for village amenities.

It will also see a small range of other games such as croquet, refreshments, trade stalls, a tombola, and entertainment from The South Leicester Ukulele Group.

Ralph Horton, one of the organisers, said: “This will be our fourth annual championship and although it is relatively small-scale we are hoping to build up interest and activity year by year.

“We share any profits raised between village amenities and a national charity - last year the profit was approximately £700 allowing us to give donations to Marie Curie, Husbands Bosworth Village Hall and our church hall.”

The conker championship will start at about 10.30am and there are six categories: men, women, teenagers (ages 13-18), children (ages 6-8), children (ages 9-12) and teams of four.

Entry costs £2.50 for adults, £10 for a team and 50p for children. Small mementos are presented to the winners of each category.

People are being asked to pre-register by phoning Ralph Horton on 01858 880526 or Sue Dhillon on 01858 881251.

The welly-wanging competition can be entered on the day and has four categories: men, women, children (ages 12-15) and children (under-11s).

It costs £1 for adults for three throws and 50p for children for three throws, with no limit to the number of entries from any individual.

“We are just hoping for good weather and a good supply of healthy conkers,” added Mr Horton.

About 250 people took part last year and the champs were Mark Ashford and Christine Fernandes-Smith in the adults section and Alex Garner and Jack Pennington in the juniors. The Invincibles took the team crown.
