TV documentary on prison’s ‘Lifers’
A CHILLING insight into the life of convicted murderers spending time behind bars in Gartree Prison was the subject of a Channel 4 TV documentary on Monday.
The Cutting Edge programme, filmed at the prison over six months, featured interviews with inmates serving life sentences.
In it they describe their crimes as well as their feelings at the prospect of spending the rest of their lives in prison.
The documentary, still available to watch on Channel 4’s 4od service, also explored the behavioural courses convicted killers are expected to take. Every-day prison life was also shown - in one scene an inmate describes how prisoners make alcoholic ‘hooch’ out of orange juice and cream crackers, among other ingredients.
Guards are shown finding bottles of the illegal hooch under an inmate’s bed, before tipping it away.
