Latest on ‘Cultural Quarter’ movement

A MEDLEY of entertainment is being organised for the next event in Harborough’s ‘cultural quarter’ movement.

The close proximity of the library, museum, theatre, parish church and Old Grammar School has led to organisers of the event, Hello Harborough, to see the area in Church Square as a cultural quarter.

In May, the five venues hosted a night of culture. Now there is to be another event on September 22.

Organisers of Hello Harborough from the cultural quarter are seeking musicians, singers, dancers and people to perform sketches and recitations on the day.

Auditions take place in Harborough Theatre lounge on September 1, between 2 and 4pm and September 5 between 7 and 9pm.

Those who make it through will be performing at the open stage part of the day.

If the weather is good there will be deckchairs placed around an open performing area around the Old Grammar School, if not the performances will take place under it.

During Hello Harborough there will be cream teas being served in St Dionysius during the afternoon and a Victorian school master running lessons in the Old Grammar School.

There will be behind-the-scenes tours of Harborough Theatre.

Harborough Library will be showing an exhibition of photographs called Harborough Then and Now. There will also be a blue badge tour of the town starting at the museum at 2pm and finishing in the library with refreshments.

Historical characters will be wandering around the town bringing history to life for Harborough residents.

Simply Simon’s were involved in the last cultural quarter event and this time they will be hosting live theatre at the cafe in Adam and Eve Street.

Harborough Museum will host live music.

Jane Tugwell, an assistant at the museum, said: “Its also the first day of Leicestershire food fortnight. So I would also like to ask any local businesses who might like to get involved to come forward perhaps to do food tasting within the Cultural Quarter or to be part of the town treasure trail that we will be running on the day which will highlight the history of some of our towns shops.”
