Crunch time for apples

A HARBOROUGH group is encouraging people to pick their own apples and bring them along to a special apple pressing day in October.

Harborough Transition Town is trying to raise awareness of food sustainability through the first Harborough Apple Day, which is on Saturday, October 29, at Harborough Methodist Church, between 1 and 4pm.

The group will have an apple press on the day, which people can use to squeeze their apples – although there will also be activities for children and information about food sustainability.

Gillian Baverstock, group member, said the group is also collecting apple-related recipes in advance, which will be collated in a recipe book.

She added: “People in the Harborough area may have an apple tree or two in their garden but not enough to make it worth buying their own apple press.

“At this event they can get their apples squeezed and get more ideas through the recipe book of what they can do with them.”

Recipe ideas should be emailed to gillian.baverstockappleday@yahoo.co.uk. The group will also be demonstrating the press at the Lubenham Scarecrow Weekend on September 10 and 11.
