A novel idea

TIMBERDICK – the call girl-turned amateur detective – has returned in the latest mystery by Harborough-based crime novelist Malcolm Noble.

Mr Noble, who with his wife Christine runs Christine's Book Cabin, in Coventry Road, wrote his first novel in 2003 in response to customer requests for a crime novel with a mystery element.

And five years later his fifth offering – The Parish of Frayed Ends, a crime novel set in a fictional south coast port town in the 1960s – has hit the shelves.

Drawing on memories of growing up in Portsmouth in the 1960s as well as of serving as a policeman in the town, Mr Noble wrote his debut novel – Timberdick's First Case – in 2003.

Three more books - Liking Good Jazz, Piggy Tucker's Poison and The Case of the Dirty Verger – followed.

And for his latest offering Mr Noble has once again returned to the 60s-set sleazy streets of Goodladies Road to tell the tale of his saucy heroine's attempts to solve three murders.

Mr Noble says his books are crime mysteries in the classic sense – giving readers clues to solve the puzzle and inviting them to beat the detective to the answers.

He added: "When my first novel appeared in 2004, I didn't imagine that the story would develop into a saga told through a series of books.

"I am very grateful to those readers who have shown their support."

The Parish of Frayed Ends was released on Friday and is available from Christine's Book Cabin and other book shops, priced 7.99.

Mr Noble will be visiting the Welland Writers Group, at Great Bowden Village Hall on Wednesday, March 19, at 10am.
