HAVING read your headline article re car parking in the June 25 edition, I can't help wondering who runs Harborough, the council or Sainsbury's!
I see you contacted Sainsbury’s’ head office with a view to finding out what is happening and that they refused to comment.
Be thankful about this because if they had commented it would have been just a load of platitudes and waffle. You may reme
mber I wrote to The Mail about the number of abandoned trolleys littering our town and since then have contacted Sainsbury’s’ head office on a number of occasions to try to get some action to cure the problem. This is how I am aware of the platitudes and waffle!
So far on the plus side for the town they have purchased a piece of chain to secure the trolleys at night, but still nothing to prevent them going walkabout during the day.
On the minus side, now instead of the store reporting them to the recovery company as soon as they are told about it, the information is only passed on one day a week and they lay around the town for a far longer period. We still have Sainsbury’s trolleys littering our town and it would seem they have no intention of remedying this situation. Perhaps if the council is going to be thousands of pounds out of pocket because of Sainsbury’s high-handed actions with regards to parking, it should recoup some of this money by imposing the £80 litter fee for every abandoned trolley found in the town. Sainsbury’s might claim to have the best interests of customers at heart and to be always looking to improve things for their shoppers, but you can be sure this only applies if it is best for Sainsbury’s.
