IT'S nice to think there are so many who are concerned about the town in which we live.
There were over 30 gathered at the Settling Rooms on Saturday, November 7, engaged in what your reporter called “a blitz on grot spots”.
They were there to pick up rubbish around the centre of Market Harborough, which thoughtless people had throw
n down without any care.
The litter-pick was arranged by the Environment Group of Harborough Improvement Team.
The volunteers ranged in age from around 10 to over 80. They came from all walks of life. A number of organisations were represented which included HIT, Harborough in Bloom, Market Harborough Civic Society, Self Unlimited and the Scouts, as well as individuals who wanted to help.
The event was ably organised by HIT’S Town Development Officer, Chris Sewart (0778 6276365), who arranged unlimited tea and coffee, fluorescent vests, gloves, rubbish bags and a contraption which I am sure has a name but is used to pick up litter without using your fingers.
The black rubbish bags used were 100 per cent bio-degradable and were an ideal alternative to ‘normal’ plastic bags. Full bags were collected for the council by their contractor FOSCA.
HIT organises town centre litter-picks twice a year; the next one will be on May 15, 2010. It will be advertised in the spring and everyone is invited to help. It’s great, and next time we hope to offer all those who take part a healthy breakfast to give them extra energy!
If you are concerned about the accumulation of litter in your neighbourhood you may be interested in a new initiative from Harborough District Council. NEAT (Neighbourhood Environmental Action Team) provides support and advice, and works together with residents to keep neighbourhoods clean and tidy.
